REASONS ABOUND TO MAKE LONDON MY FAVORITE CITY
by LEO ZABINSKI, CTC, MCC, DS
As many regular readers know, London is my favorite city in the world. Over the years, I've visited it over 50 times. People often ask, "Haven't you seen everything by now?" The short answer is no!
London has the most vibrant theatre in the world, with about three times the productions on Broadway. Because of the lower cost to mount a production, many plays that originate in London and prove successful, subsequently play Broadway. American movie star Kevin Spacey has been the artistic director of the Old Vic Theatre for several years and convinces many of his Hollywood friends to be part of Old Vic productions.
With six major art galleries, London often develops major art exhibits which are constantly changing. The fall season alone featured the London Film Festival and the London Jazz Festival.
Tickets to plays, art exhibits and festivals are priced at only a small fraction of what they cost in the United States. So there is more to see and more you can afford to see.
Like all of the world's great cities London itself is changing. New restaurants are always opening and the culinary standards, led by TV star chef Gordon Ramsey, are exceedingly high.
But maybe, the biggest thing that brings me back again and again is the sense of history that lies around every street corner. Shakespeare, Dickens and Churchill are only a few who have actually walked these streets. Hundreds of fictional characters from Sherlock Holmes to Harry Potter also had adventures set in London.
No wonder it's my favorite city.
